A Nigerian business running a 100 kVA generator for twelve hours a day burns close to ₦1.8 million of diesel every week. That's fuel alone, before servicing, oil changes, or the top-end overhaul that arrives every 15,000 running hours.
If that figure sounds about right, you already know why solar keeps coming up in your board meetings. What you probably don't have is a credible number for the cost of solar installation in Nigeria at commercial scale. Quotes arrive with a three-fold spread for the same nameplate capacity, and nobody explains why.
This article gives you the working numbers. The Cost of Solar Installation in Nigeria: 2026 Headline Numbers
Commercial solar is priced per kilowatt-peak (kWp) of installed panel capacity. That's the unit to insist on when comparing quotes, because it strips out the confusion of comparing a 30-panel system to a 45-panel system.
For 2026, a properly engineered commercial solar installation in Nigeria, without battery storage, falls in these ranges:
10 kWp (small commercial): ₦1.4m to ₦1.9m per kWp, so roughly ₦14m to ₦19m installed
50 kWp (mid-scale commercial): ₦1.1m to ₦1.5m per kWp, so roughly ₦55m to ₦75m installed
100 kWp (industrial): ₦0.95m to ₦1.3m per kWp, so roughly ₦95m to ₦130m installed
250 kWp and above: ₦0.85m to ₦1.15m per kWp, so roughly ₦210m to ₦290m installed
Add battery storage and the budget changes shape entirely. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) storage lands at roughly ₦250,000 to ₦380,000 per usable kWh installed in Nigeria. A 50 kWp system paired with 100 kWh of storage therefore runs closer to ₦80m to ₦113m all in.
Two caveats that matter more than the numbers themselves. First, these are engineering estimates for tier-1 equipment with proper design, structural work and commissioning, not the cheapest possible assembly of parts. Second, roughly 70% of the bill of materials is imported and dollar-denominated, so every figure here moves with the naira. At the time of writing the market rate sat near ₦1,370 to the dollar. A 15% currency swing moves a ₦100m project by ₦10m before anyone touches a spanner.

Why the Cost of Solar Installation in Nigeria Falls as Systems Scale
Notice that the per-kWp figure falls by roughly a third between a 10 kWp and a 250 kWp system. This isn't a volume discount on hardware. It's the arithmetic of fixed costs.
Design engineering, structural assessment, permitting, grid interface studies, mobilisation and commissioning cost broadly the same whether the array is 10 kWp or 100 kWp. On a small system those fixed items can be 20% of the total. On a 250 kWp installation they might be 6%.
Labour behaves the same way. A crew that mobilises to a site in Ogun State bills travel and setup once. Whether they install 24 panels or 240, that first day looks similar.
The practical implication is worth sitting with. If you're weighing a 30 kWp system against a 50 kWp system, the larger one may deliver 66% more energy for only 45% more money. Where Every Naira Goes: The Commercial Solar Cost Breakdown
Here's how a typical 100 kWp commercial installation in Nigeria distributes its cost, expressed both as a share of the total and as an indicative naira figure on a ₦110m project.

Solar panels: 30% to 35%, roughly ₦33m to ₦39m. Tier-1 monocrystalline modules in the 550W to 620W class. Panels are the most visible line item and the one clients fixate on, but they're barely a third of the project.
Inverters: 12% to 18%, roughly ₦13m to ₦20m. Grid-tie or hybrid inverters sized to the array with appropriate thermal headroom. This is the single component where cutting cost causes the most downstream pain, and we've written a separate guide on choosing a solar inverter for African conditions.
Mounting, racking and structural works: 8% to 12%, roughly ₦9m to ₦13m. Includes roof structural assessment. Many Nigerian industrial roofs need reinforcement before they can carry an array through harmattan wind loading, and that survey is not optional.
Balance of system: 8% to 12%, roughly ₦9m to ₦13m. DC and AC cabling, combiner boxes, surge protection, isolators, earthing, cable management. Cheap cabling and inadequate earthing cause a disproportionate share of the failures we're called in to remediate.
Installation labour and logistics: 10% to 15%, roughly ₦11m to ₦17m. Certified crew, lifting equipment, site safety, transport. Lagos and Port Harcourt sites cost less to mobilise than upcountry ones.
Engineering, design and compliance: 5% to 10%, roughly ₦6m to ₦11m. Load audit, yield modelling, single-line diagrams, protection coordination, permitting and utility interface where the system is grid-tied.
Commissioning, monitoring and first-year support: 3% to 5%, roughly ₦3m to ₦6m. Performance testing, remote monitoring hardware, handover training, initial maintenance visits.
When storage is added, the picture shifts hard. Batteries typically become 35% to 50% of total capex, and every other line falls proportionally. That's why a solar-plus-storage quote and a solar-only quote for the same kWp can look like they're describing different planets.
The Real Benchmark Is Diesel, Not the Grid
Here's where most cost analyses go wrong. They compare solar against the utility tariff, conclude the savings are modest, and stop. For Nigerian commercial and industrial users, that's the wrong comparison, because the grid is rarely the marginal source of power.
Work out what a generator actually costs per kilowatt-hour. A well-loaded diesel genset consumes roughly 0.30 to 0.40 litres per kWh generated, and most commercial gensets in Nigeria run part-loaded, pushing them toward the upper end. At the current pump price of around ₦1,620 per litre, fuel alone costs ₦490 to ₦650 per kWh.
Then add servicing intervals, oil and filters, the top-end overhaul at 15,000 hours, and the capital cost of the genset amortised across its life. All in, diesel generation in Nigeria realistically costs ₦680 to ₦960 per kWh, or roughly $0.50 to $0.70.
Commercial solar in Nigeria generates at $0.10 to $0.14 per kWh, or roughly ₦140 to ₦190. That figure isn't ours. It comes from BloombergNEF's Solar for Businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa study commissioned by responsAbility, which found on-site solar cheaper than commercial tariffs in 7 of 15 African markets studied. A separate RMI and Daystar Power programme in Nigeria modelled a blended solar-plus-grid tariff of ₦169 per kWh, with 17 of 20 pilot customers projected to save an average of 26% on energy costs.
So the comparison isn't solar at ₦150 against Band A grid at ₦225. It's solar at ₦150 against diesel at ₦800. That gap is the entire business case, and it's why roughly 85% of Africa's newly installed solar capacity is now commercial and industrial rather than utility-scale. Consider a case we see repeatedly. A plastics manufacturer in Ikeja, run by a managing director we'll call Chidi, was spending ₦31m a year on diesel across two 150 kVA sets. He'd been quoted for solar twice since 2023 and passed both times because the capex looked indefensible against a generator he'd already paid for.

What neither quote showed him was that his sunk generator cost was irrelevant to the decision. The relevant comparison was ₦31m a year of fuel he hadn't yet burned against a one-time ₦68m of capex. By the time he ran that number properly, three years of avoidable diesel spend had already gone up the exhaust.
Solar Payback Period in Nigeria: Working the Arithmetic
Payback is where the case either closes or collapses, so let's do it transparently with a 50 kWp system.
Generation. Southern Nigeria averages roughly 4.2 peak sun hours daily; the north runs higher, closer to 5.5. Applying a performance ratio of 0.80 to account for temperature derating, soiling, cabling losses and inverter efficiency, a 50 kWp array in Lagos produces about 168 kWh on an average day, or roughly 61,000 kWh a year.
Usable generation. Not all of it gets consumed. A factory closed on Sundays and public holidays, without storage to shift surplus, will realistically self-consume 80% to 90%. Call it 51,000 kWh a year of genuinely displaced load.
Value of displaced energy. At ₦750 per kWh of avoided diesel generation, that's ₦38m a year. Against a solar-only capex of ₦65m, simple payback lands at 1.7 years.
Add 100 kWh of storage to cover evening shifts and the capex rises to about ₦100m, but usable generation climbs toward 58,000 kWh and diesel runtime falls further. Payback stretches to roughly 2.6 years.
Both numbers are aggressive by global standards, and they're a direct product of how expensive diesel has become. The inflection point was 2022 to 2024, when Nigerian diesel moved from around ₦250 per litre to beyond ₦800, a rise near 290%. It has climbed considerably further since. Every naira added to the pump price shortens solar payback.
Run the same system against grid electricity instead and the picture inverts. Displacing 51,000 kWh of Band A supply at ₦225 per kWh saves about ₦6.4m annually, giving a payback beyond ten years. This is the single most important thing to understand about the cost of solar installation in Nigeria: the economics are driven almost entirely by how many diesel hours you displace. A business on reliable Band A supply with minimal generator runtime has a genuinely weak case. A business running gensets eight hours a day has an overwhelming one.

What Makes a Quote Cheap, and Why That Should Concern You
If our ranges look high against a quote sitting on your desk, the difference is almost never negotiating skill. It's specification, and the gap usually hides in four places.
Panel tier and warranty. Tier-1 modules carry 25-year performance warranties from manufacturers with the balance sheet to honour them. Unbranded or B-grade panels are 25% to 40% cheaper and frequently arrive with cosmetic microcracks that surface as output loss in year three.
Inverter sizing and quality. An inverter rated at 45 kW on a 50 kWp array will clip production on the best generating days, and an inverter without thermal headroom for a 40°C plant room fails early. Undersizing here is invisible on a quote and expensive for twenty years.
Structural and electrical work. Some installers skip the roof structural assessment entirely and mount directly onto purlins never designed for the load. We've been called to sites where the array was sound and the roof underneath it was not.

Engineering. The genuinely cheap quotes contain no load audit, no yield model and no protection study. The system is sized from a rule of thumb applied to a monthly bill. It might work. Frequently it produces 60% of what the client was told to expect, and there's no design documentation to establish why.
Take a case that illustrates the pattern. A hospitality group in Abuja, whose facilities director we'll call Fatima, accepted a 40 kWp quote in early 2025 that undercut the nearest competing bid by ₦19m. Within fourteen months two inverters had failed outside a warranty that turned out not to cover the installation, the array was producing well under its modelled yield because it had been oriented for roof convenience rather than solar gain, and the generators were still running most afternoons. The remediation quote exceeded the original saving. Cheap engineering is a deferred invoice, not a discount.

Most well-engineered Nigerian C&I systems target 60% to 85% of load from solar and retain the generator as backup, which is where the cost curve is most efficient.
Do solar panel prices in Nigeria change with the exchange rate? Directly and immediately. Panels, inverters and cells are imported and dollar-priced, so roughly 70% of a system's bill of materials tracks the naira. This is why quotes are usually valid for 14 to 30 days and why deferring a decision through a period of currency weakness has a measurable cost.
What maintenance does a commercial solar system need? Panel cleaning quarterly or more often in dusty and harmattan-affected areas, annual electrical inspection and torque checks, inverter servicing, and continuous remote performance monitoring. Budget roughly 1% to 2% of capex annually. It's a fraction of generator maintenance, but it isn't zero, and unmonitored systems commonly lose 10% to 20% of yield to faults nobody noticed.
Getting an Accurate Number for Your Facility
Everything above is a planning range. A real figure needs your actual load, and that's a short list of things to gather.
Pull twelve months of diesel purchase records and electricity bills. Note your generator hours and capacity. Get your roof area, its orientation and its structural condition. Identify which loads must survive an outage and which can wait. That package turns a ₦95m-to-₦130m range into a number you can take to a board.
